Renting a Tesla is a little different from picking up a set of keys. Instead of a physical key, your host (the vehicle operator) grants you digital access through the Tesla app. This article walks you through exactly how that works, from booking to drop-off.
How Tesla Key Access Works for Rentals
Teslas don't use traditional keys. Owners add drivers to their vehicle through the Tesla app by going to Security & Drivers, tapping Manage Drivers, and sending an invitation to the driver. Once your host adds you as a driver, your phone becomes your key — no physical handoff required.
This means two things matter for a smooth rental:
- You need the Tesla app installed and set up before pickup.
- Your host needs your correct account details (usually the phone number or email tied to your Tesla account) to send the invite.
Step 1: Download and Set Up the Tesla App
Before your rental starts, download the Tesla app from the App Store or Google Play and create a free Tesla account if you don't already have one. Make sure:
- The app is updated to the latest version
- Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
- You've confirmed which email or phone number you'll share with your host, since that's what they'll use to add you as a driver
Step 2: Your Host Sends You Access
Once your booking is confirmed, your host will add you as a driver on the vehicle. In most Tesla vehicles, your phone serves as your primary key, giving you access to all the driver and vehicle control features in the Tesla app.
You'll typically receive this access one of two ways:
- Invitation link or notification — if you already have a Tesla account, you'll get an invite you can accept directly in the app.
- Welcome email — if you don't yet have a Tesla account, Tesla sends a welcome email to your registered email address so you can create one and accept access.
Accept the invitation as soon as you receive it — ideally before you arrive to pick up the car, so there's no delay at pickup.
Step 3: Set Up Your Phone Key at the Vehicle
Access to the account isn't quite the same as your phone being ready to unlock the car — you'll need to pair your phone key once you're near the vehicle. Standing near the vehicle, open the Tesla app, select the vehicle, and tap the "Set Up" button next to "Phone Key," then follow the prompts to complete pairing.
A few tips for this step:
- You need to be close to the car for the automatic setup to work. If setup is unsuccessful, you may simply be too far from the vehicle — the app will walk you through using a backup key card instead if one is provided.
- Some hosts let you choose whether the phone key unlocks all doors or just the driver's door — this is normal and up to the vehicle's settings.
Step 4: Using Your Phone as the Key
Once your phone key is set up, you can:
- Unlock/lock the car by walking up to or away from it (if Walk-Away Door Lock is enabled), or manually through the app
- Start the car using the app or simply by having your phone inside with you, depending on the vehicle's settings
- Monitor the vehicle — charge status, location, and climate — right from the app during your rental
Keep your phone's Bluetooth on for the entire rental period. If Bluetooth is off, the car won't recognize your phone as a key, and you'll need to unlock/start it manually from within the app instead.
Step 5: End of Rental
At the end of your booking, your host will remove your driver access from the vehicle. Once that happens, your phone will no longer function as a key, so make sure all your belongings are out of the vehicle before drop-off, and don't rely on the app for access after your return time.
Troubleshooting
- Didn't get an invite? Double check your host has the correct phone number or email on file — this is the most common reason invites don't arrive.
- Phone key won't pair? Confirm you're standing close to the car, your Tesla app is updated, and Bluetooth is on. A weak or outdated app version is a frequent culprit.
- App shows the car but no unlock option? Make sure you've fully accepted the driver invitation (not just received it) — accepting is a separate step from being invited.
- Still stuck? Reach out to your host directly through the platform messaging first, since they control your access. If the issue seems to be with the Tesla app itself, Tesla's own support can help troubleshoot pairing issues.
