Saving on your next journey is a great feeling, but hitting a snag with a discount code at checkout can bring things to a sudden pause. Most promo or gift card errors come down to specific booking rules—such as trip dates, minimum stay lengths, vehicle categories, or account eligibility.
Use this guide to quickly identify why your code is being rejected and how to resolve it.
Why am I receiving an error message when I use my Ride Discount Code/Gift Card?
If your code isn't working, it is likely due to a specific restriction set by the Host or the platform. Here are the most common reasons a code might be rejected:
One Code at a Time: You can only use one discount code per Ride reservation. Entering a new code will replace the first one rather than stacking them.
Expired or Inactive Codes: Some Ride promo codes are seasonal and have strict expiration dates, while Host-created codes may only be valid for specific promotional windows.
Exact Spelling & Formatting: Ensure the code is entered exactly as provided. Host-initiated discount codes often use custom capitalization, numbers, or special characters that must match perfectly to validate.
"First Trip" Only Rule: Many Ride-issued codes (like those received via SMS or email signups) and certain Host-created codes are exclusive to your first-ever booking on the platform. If you have rented with us before, these codes will not apply.
Shopping vs. Travel Dates: Check the fine print of your promotion. Some codes require you to book by a specific deadline (Shopping Date), while others only apply if your actual trip takes place within a specific calendar range (Travel Date).
Minimum Length of Stay: Many Host-created codes require a minimum number of rental nights (e.g., a "4-night minimum"). If your reservation is shorter than the required duration, the code will return an error.
Vehicle & Location Restrictions: Certain promotions are only valid for specific vehicle categories (e.g., campervans, SUVs, or luxury vehicles) or for trips originating in specific states or regions.
I used a Ride Promo Code, but my subtotal didn't change. Is my code working?
Your code is likely working! It’s important to understand which part of your booking total the promotion applies to:
Ride-Issued Promo Codes: Promotions created directly by Ride apply specifically to the Ride Service Fee, not the nightly vehicle rental rate.
Host-Issued Discount Codes: Only codes provided directly by your Host will reduce the nightly rental subtotal.
Check Your Price Breakdown: Look at the Service Fee line item on your checkout summary—you should see your Ride promo discount reflected there.
-
Discount Code Capping: Promotional discounts cannot exceed the line item they apply to.
For example, if you have a $50 Ride promo code but your service fee is $30, the maximum discount applied will be capped at $30.
I’m having trouble with a Host-provided Discount Code. How do I know if it applied?
Host-created codes operate under specific rules set by the vehicle owner. To verify if a Host code applied correctly, check your Price Breakdown on the checkout page and keep these rules in mind:
Check the Subtotal: Host codes only discount the nightly rental rate. They will not alter taxes, security deposits, protection packages, or the Ride service fee.
Minimum Night Requirement: Hosts often attach a minimum stay requirement (e.g., 3 or 5 nights) to their promotional codes.
First-Time Guest Rule: Some Hosts offer discounts specifically for your first time renting their vehicle. Returning Guests to that specific Ride Host may not be eligible.
Promotional Travel Dates: Host codes are often seasonal. Verify that your selected travel dates fall strictly within the Host's active promotional window.
Pro Tip: If a Host sent you a code and it isn't applying, message the Host directly through the Ride Messaging Portal. They can verify if the code is active or adjust their listing settings to accommodate your booking.
